Photographer's Website

How might I design a website that showcases the artist's work in a clear and effective manner?
Project Overview
Mita Reichardt, a local Seattle photographer, wanted to take her photography journey to the next level. As a professional photographer, a portfolio website is essential:
  • Showcase the artist's work and identity
  • Connect the audience with a way to explore and purchase the artist's work
  • Serve as an easy and convenient way to contact the artist
  • See the artist's past and upcoming shows
My contributions

I developed the full structure of the website on Squarespace, as well as the basic elements of branding for Mita's site. The artist and I collaborated and met often, as she needed guidance as to how to structure a portfolio and the potential that a website could bring to her professional practice.

You can see the website live here.

Considerations
  • Accessibility is key (legibility, contrast, image size, etc.)
  • Organization to easily understand and navigate a vast body of work
  • Clear navigation within the site and to the artist's social media
  • Basic elements of branding, which was not the focus of the project, but necessary to create a cohesive style for the site and future assets
Audience
  • Seattle photography enthusiasts and participants of the local art scene
  • Local museums, galleries, and art institutions
  • Potentially galleries and individuals based in Germany, where the author is from
Sample of future work
Challenges
  • An extensive and evolving body of work required an intuitive organizational system so that users could easily navigate the site.
  • A categorization system was also needed so that clients could easily name the photographs they wished to purchase.
  • The artist is planning to add two future categories to the site, including a pottery category. The website structure allows for such evolution and expansion.
Final Thoughts
Working with Mita Reichardt was a real pleasure. This project was engaging since it involved many steps: the production aspect of preparing all the images for web, the planning and building of the site, and the collaboration with the artist herself.
